As this plateau continues, the competition for a share of voice with these influencers will become more and more fierce. Better spend some time on creative social presence, and stop just pushing out coupons.
• BP buys oil spill PPC ads: Nice idea, poor execution | Econsultancy – Interesting use of PPC display ads as PR damage control. We’ve seen this done with AdWords, but display ads area an even louder (faster?) way to respond to negative press.
• Candid answers from AT&T on the new iPhone data plans – The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) – Everything you really need to know about the AT&T plans.
• An Author’s Plan for Social Media Efforts « [chrisbrogan.com] – Just change the word “book” to product or brand, and this post is a great how to guide for social influence marketing.

• Personal Tech: Apple iPad FAQ’s – @pogue answers all of the important questions I had about iPad. Video out, how’s the typing experience (really), USB, they 12hr battery life claim is not a myth.
• Facebook’s New Solution For Unofficial Pages: Community Pages – Facebook makes a distinction between brand pages and pages meant to build community around a topic. Think it will take off?
• BRITE: Influence on Twitter can’t be purchased with Kim Kardashian | Econsultancy – Can you buy influence on Twitter? Maybe this should say “meaningful influence”?
• iPhone and iPad Stock Files – collis – GraphicRiver – iPad UI graphic elements kits from Envato for your application design and wireframing needs.
• Custom Post Types in WordPress 3.0 – Custom post types is going to be a game changer for my dev team. We currently use a few plugins to massage WordPress into a CMS, namely Flutter and Secondary HTML Content. Custom post types might eliminate the need for those plugins. RT @danielbachhuber.
• Mirror files across systems with rsync – Backup utilities – Lifehacker – I know this is the right way to backup. Real geeks use rsync. I haven’t had the chance to poke this bear yet, but Gina’s article is where I’ll start.

TechCrunch revealed that Facebook will be adding a feature this week that will allow you to send your Facebook status update out as a tweet. The tweets include a link back to your status on Facebook via the new fb.me URL shortener. Read that as monster inbound traffic for Facebook.

Of particular concern will surely be the strain this will place on Twitter, as millions of users with both Facebook and Twitter accounts suddenly increase their tweet frequency. More on that from All Facebook.

Prepare to be seeing more of the Fail Whale.

UPDATE (4/15/10): The Huffington Post just posted actual Twitter user stats & figures from Chirp, the Twitter developer’s conference.

Here are the highlights:

• Twitter now has 105,779,710 registered users.
• New users are signing up at the rate of 300,000 per day.
• 180 million unique visitors come to the site every month.
• 75% of Twitter traffic comes from outside Twitter.com (i.e. via third party applications.)
• Twitter gets a total of 3 billion requests a day via its API.
• Twitter users are, in total, tweeting an average of 55 million tweets a day.
• Twitter’s search engine receives around 600 million search queries per day.
• Of Twitter’s active users, 37 percent use their phone to tweet.
• Over half of all tweets (60 percent) come from third party applications.
• Twitter itself has grown: in the past year alone, it has grown from 25 to 175 employees.

The actual figure for Twitter user stats is hard to get, unless you’re a Twitter employee.  Here’s a list of links that are helpful in estimating just how many Tweeters are out there.

http://www.twitdir.com displays a running total of the number of public Twitter users in it’s directory.

http://tweetrush.com analyzes number of tweets sent over the last 7 days.

http://www.twitterholic.com lists the most popular Twitter users by followers.

http://www.compete.com shows the approx number of unique visitors to the twitter.com site.
