Illustrator CS3 crashes on “Place…”.

I finally dove in and upgraded to Adobe CS3. Unfortunately, Illustrator was crashing whenever I called the “Place..” command.

I found a fix pretty easily though, and an official Adobe TechNote at that.

Adobe Creative Suite 3 products crash when you save, open, or place a file, after installing the Version Cue CS3 3.1.0 update (Mac OS X v10.4.x – 10.5)

BLESS YOUR HEART! This was happening to me today, in the middle of an unexpected project (never would’ve run updates, if I thought it would interfere). Your post saved me a TON of time I would have spent hunting this technote, or solution down. THANK YOU!

This started happening to me yesterday, but it’s in both InDesign and Illustrator (and I assume Photoshop). That’s a pretty bad bug to unleash on all of us. I am on PC too, so it’s not only on Mac.

OS X 10.5.2, Adobe Illustrator CS3 – mine was crashing whenever I tried to access the gradient or transparency windows. Nobody else seemed to have the same problem but luckily your solution seems to have solved my problem.

In case it helps anybody else find this page, my Adobe Illustrator logfile was filled with hundreds of pages of this error:
