How to show only your single latest post on your WordPress home page.

Wordpress Settings > Reading - setting the number of posts per pageIn WordPress 2.x under Settings > Reading, you can set a number for “Blog pages show at most”.  This applies globally, however.  I discovered a method to make your home page to show only the latest post, while allowing all other blog pages to respect the “at most” number.

In index.php, just before the loop, I added the following line:

<?php query_posts('showposts=1'); ?>

Basically, that sets up a preemptive query and grabs only the latest post, rather than allowing the loop to query the latest “at most” number of posts.

Mac owners beware, all Nvidia 84 and 86s graphics cards are bad… or are they?

Are Nvidia GeForce 84 and 86 chips prone to heat exhaustion? We’re upgrading our laptops here at DWC.  In fact, we were about to sign the papers when we heard about this story in The Inquirer. (Thanks @inneralien)  In a nutshell, the article claims that all Nvidia 8400 and 8600 series chips are bad, mobile and desktop.  In our case, that affects the new MacBook Pros we have been lustily coveting.  Laptops, since they tend to cycle more frequently, are apparently more susceptible to the heat related issue.

In a related article, Ars Technica downplays The Inquirer’s take on Nvidia’s publicly admitted issue, stating that only certain configurations will have potential issues, and of those, only notebooks are affected.  From At:

Two weeks ago, NVIDIA filed a report (PDF) with the SEC stating that it would take a $150 million to $200 million one-time charge to cover “anticipated customer warranty, repair, return, replacement and other consequential costs and expenses arising from a weak die/packaging Continue reading

How to take a screenshot of your iPhone display.

How to take a picture of your iPhone\'s screenWhoa.  To take a screenshot or screen capture of your iPhone display right now, simultaneously press the Power and Home buttons.  That’s the one on the top, and the big button on the face.  The image will be waiting in your photo gallery.  Nice.  Possibly only for 2.0 iPhone software users, not sure.

Thanks to Andy Ihnatko via Twitter for this.

How to determine the right time to buy a new Mac.

Being an outspoken Apple fiend, plenty of people ask me when they should upgrade, and to which model.  The ones who are most concerned are usually the switchers.  The poor folks are used to buying an $800 PC only to have it bricked within a year, full of spyware and OS patches.  Take it from someone who grew up on PC’s. For a well designed machine that will last over twice as long, is a treat to use, and lets you get your work done instead of fighting you, $2000 is a bargain.

I usually end up upgrading my Mac to a new model every 18 to 24 months.  As new media designers, we work our machines pretty hard here doing graphic design, video editing/compositing, and audio/music recording, so your mileage may vary.

When should you make the jump?  Check the Buyer’s Guide at Macrumors.  I use it all the time to anticipate the release of new Apple hardware and to aid in buying decisions.  Also, if the date is close to Macworld Expo or the World Wide Developer’s Conference, wait until after the conference, just in case they announce new product.  Finally, the Apple Store special deals section can get you a screaming deal on Macs that are functionally every bit as good as they were new.  Oh, and for all Macs, I recommend AppleCare.

How to download and save online or YouTube videos and play them offline

Tater Pig video as seen on YouTube.com/daynwMost of the online video content you’re going to see online these days has been encoded by Adobe Flash.  These are called FLV’s in the biz because of their .flv file extension.  A common request I’ve heard is for a method to download the FLV for later playback, offline or otherwise, say for a presentation or to edit into  another video.  Or dare I say mashup.

Safari users, congrats.  This method is for you:

  1. Navigate to the page where the video is embedded.
  2. Open your Activity window. (Window > Activity)
  3. Find the path to the .flv file in the Activity window and select it.  If you don’t find anything named .flv, select the path with the largest file size.  That’s probably the video.
  4. Choose Edit > Copy
  5. Now, open your Downloads window (Window > Downloads), and choose Edit > Paste to begin downloading the video file.

The video will be saved to your downloads folder, wherever you have that set. (Safari > Preferences… > General)  Sometimes, as with YouTube, it won’t be named (something).flv, so you might have to add the .flv part to the end.

iSquint, from the makers of Visual Hub for video conversionGood work.  Now we you downloaded the Flash video file.  How do you play it or use it in another app?  We have to convert it to a different format, probably Quicktime for most of you.  To do this, I use Visual Hub‘s little brother, iSquint.  iSquint is free, and will spit out a Quicktime movie, or even an H.264 encoded video, for all you video geeks.  The converted video can be played by Quicktime Player, included in your presentation, even edited in your favorite video editing suite.

Okay, so it’s not one-click easy, but it’s also not that tough to save your favorite videos from nearly any video sharing site.  See also keepvid.com if you want an online solution, or the Mac only app, Videobox.

Disc vs Disk. What’s the difference, if there is one?

disc or disk?It turns out, there is a difference.  Basically, discs are removable storage media, like a CD, and not surrounded by a case of any kind.

Disks are magnetic, like your hard disk drive, and are typically contained in a protective casing.

Apple actually has a knowledge base article on the disc or disk topic.  Now you know.

Happy WordPress Day! Why we heart WP.

It’s the day we unofficially celebrate the existence of the WordPress blogging platform.  Big thanks to Automattic for forging what has become one of our weapons of choice.

We hearted WordPress right out of the gate for its easy configuration as a simple content management system.  As open and streamlined as many CMSs are aimed at being, many “simple” CMSs with good intentions tend to be too bloated for some of our clients.  When we started using WP, it was the perfect minimalist shim to wedge in that static XHTML/CSS to simple custom CMS site gap.
