Using their powers for good.

UrbanDrinks.comI was passed a URL for a site that’s worth mentioning. UrbanDrinks.com is a happy hour locator, review, and pub crawl planner site for Portland, OR neighborhoods. Features of note are the graphic display of happy hours happening “right now”, along with Google map pins indicating the locations of local watering holes. If ever there were an example of “Might for Right”, this be it.UrbanDrinks.com has harnessed the power of emerging web technologies to answer a niche question we’ve all asked… “I dunno, where do you want to go?”

This certainly is not the first of its kind, see Unthirsty.com, a slightly more eye candied tool that serves a similar purpose. Then again, let’s be honest. When searching for critical information on this topic, you want it fast without a lot of hoopla.

Want to take it with you? Just don’t trust silicone to tell you where the party’s at in PDX? Check out the Happy Hour Guide Book.

There is no Web 2.0

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

Let’s clear things up. The definition of Web 2.0 is merely a moniker given to the new way we are using the web. There hasn’t been some sort of new release of the internet that you’ll need to download, so worry not.In reality, the “2.0″ tools we are using as designers and developers have always been there, but the way web users are interacting with the provider and consuming the content is changing. (see blogging, social networks, tagging, de.lico.us, twitter) Some think this change is enough to necessitate the addition of a “2.0″ versioning tag.

When you hear Web 2.0, think “the web for the people, by the people”, and you’ll be right on. Basically, we are seeing less sites where the business is providing structured info for the user to come retrieve, and more sites where the users control what content will be provided, and how it will look. Users are interacting more with each other, rather than the main content provider.

Wrap that all up in prettier, cleaner layouts with more emphasis on graphically appealing design, and you have Web 2.0.
